Tafe vocational education and training courses (TVET)

What is TVET?

Tafe delivered vocational education and training courses. TVET enables senior high school students to undertake part of their HSC study program at a TAFE NSW college. TVET can give you a head start in both your career and in post-school study.

When you study through TVET you can gain:

  • Units of credit for your preliminary and/or HSC
  • An academic transcript from TAFE NSW
  • A statement of competencies achieved
  • A statement of attainment, certificate I or certificate II qualification
  • For some courses, completion of the optional HSC examination can count towards the calculation of your ATAR.

TVET courses can consist of:

120 hour course

  • 2 units of credit towards the HSC generally taught over 3 terms for one year. Classes can be made up of Year 11 and Year 12 students.
  • Attendance is one afternoon a week for approximately 4 hours and then a block during the last week of term 2.

240 hour course

  • 2 units of credit for both Year 11 and year 12 taught over 7 terms. Classes are offered to Year 11 students only.
  • Attendance is one afternoon a week for approximately 4 hours and then a block during the last week of term 2.
  • Work placement may be part of the course.

SPY (skills pathway for youth)

  • Students taking part in a SPY program will attend one day per week for 3 school terms and complete the full Certificate course in a ‘fast track' mode, receiving 4 units of credit towards their HSC in one year. Courses run depending on viability (student numbers).

How to apply for TVET

  • Students are required to submit an Expression of Interest application during Term 3 of the school year. TAFE determine the acceptances. Students will be notified as soon as possible as to how their application has progressed.
  • TVET commences during week 2 or week 3 in Term 1 of the new school year depending on TAFE organisation.
