What is TVET?
Tafe delivered vocational education and training courses. TVET enables senior high school students to undertake part of their HSC study program at a TAFE NSW college. TVET can give you a head start in both your career and in post-school study.
When you study through TVET you can gain:
- Units of credit for your preliminary and/or HSC
- An academic transcript from TAFE NSW
- A statement of competencies achieved
- A statement of attainment, certificate I or certificate II qualification
- For some courses, completion of the optional HSC examination can count towards the calculation of your ATAR.
TVET courses can consist of:
120 hour course
- 2 units of credit towards the HSC generally taught over 3 terms for one year. Classes can be made up of Year 11 and Year 12 students.
- Attendance is one afternoon a week for approximately 4 hours and then a block during the last week of term 2.
240 hour course
- 2 units of credit for both Year 11 and year 12 taught over 7 terms. Classes are offered to Year 11 students only.
- Attendance is one afternoon a week for approximately 4 hours and then a block during the last week of term 2.
- Work placement may be part of the course.
SPY (skills pathway for youth)
- Students taking part in a SPY program will attend one day per week for 3 school terms and complete the full Certificate course in a ‘fast track' mode, receiving 4 units of credit towards their HSC in one year. Courses run depending on viability (student numbers).
How to apply for TVET
- Students are required to submit an Expression of Interest application during Term 3 of the school year. TAFE determine the acceptances. Students will be notified as soon as possible as to how their application has progressed.
- TVET commences during week 2 or week 3 in Term 1 of the new school year depending on TAFE organisation.
