School based traineeships / Apprenticeships
NSW students can undertake a school based apprenticeship or traineeship as part of their HSC. Students can begin as early as year 10. Students combine their HSC study with the study towards a traineeship or apprenticeship. The practical work completed by students is paid and the TAFE component of study counts towards the HSC.
There are many benefits to students of a school based apprenticeship or traineeship:
- students can earn a training wage while they learn new skills at work
- they can achieve a nationally recognised qualification
- students can gain HSC unit credit for both the formal training and work component.
Employers can benefit by employing young people on part-time flexible arrangements and by being able to develop their workforce at very low cost.
